Catechesis of the Good Shepherd & CCD

Saint Aelred offers substantial catechetical formation for children ages 3-18 through our CCD-Sunday School program or our Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) program. We are working on obtaining all three levels of CGS. Our older children attend CCD, a catechetical formation program trained to help teach them their Catechism.

Saint Aelred confirms children at the age of 7.

Bishop Lopes has restored the Ancient Order for the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion for the Diocese of the Ordinariate. His letter, Come, Holy Ghost, lays out the return of sacramental formation to the home, the ecclesia domestic, with parents as primary educators, the Church assisting parents in this solemn duty, and unity of the sacraments in their original and theological order.

Confirmation is not a sacrament of "choice" or of "maturity," for we Confirmed infants in the Early Church in the Latin Rite, and the Eastern Rites of the Catholic Church still do so till this day. Rather, Confirmation is a gift, it is a sacrament which matures the child with a pouring out of additional sacramental grace by the power of the Holy Ghost.

The markers of readiness for Confirmation require the child to be the age of reason (7+), to be catechized in a manner fitting their age, to be disposed to receive the sacrament, and be able to renew their Baptismal Promise per the Rite. The parents, child, and pastor must all three discern the child is ready for the child to proceed. The normal way children receive an ecclesial catechesis fitting their age and station in the Ordinariate is by the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program. We currently have Level I catechists and are working on acquiring Level II. If you are interested in helping us build this noble catechetical model please reach out to Mrs. Tonia Landt James at StAelredCCD@gmail.com.

Children who have not received these sacraments but have passed the minimum age may begin preparation during the upcoming school year with their age group and should participate in additional catechesis that the parents can work out with the priest.
